Dear Editor,
Guyana is inundated with too many scams and I thank Kaieteur News for exposing them. Corruption runs deep. Only a few in parliament and in the regional local councils are not tainted and they are the ones we should look to for leadership come next elections.
We need to end the pervasive expansion of corruption if we are to save this nation. The country has to elect good leaders at next year’s elections – those who are not painted with the brush of corruption and poor governance and those who have the country’s future at heart, not those who want to fill their pockets.
We need leaders who will encourage an honest day’s work and reward contractors to earn government contracts based on competence not connection with government Ministers. We need a government that will be sympathetic to the working class and care for the poor, not ride the workers to enrich their wealthy friends.
The leaders I have in mind are people like Faith Harding, Khemraj Ramjattan, and Speaker Ralph Ramkaran of the PNC, AFC, and PPP respectively. Since it is likely the PPP will win the next, I think the public should ensure a qualified person like Mr. Ramkaran wins the PPP nomination.
He is the best candidate in the PPP, indeed in the country to become president. He is honest and credible and is a man of integrity. He has been a fair, fearless Speaker in parliament and he will be the one to end corruption and return the country to good governance.
There will be real development under him and respect for all regardless of party affiliation. Ramkaran is the best and most qualified person for the job within the PPP and is loved by supporters of all the parties.
The other presidential contenders like Harding and Ramjattan are also good people, but they don’t have as good a chance as a PPP candidate given the political arithmetic in the country in terms of support for the parties. But they will also make good presidents.
Unless we have a Ramkaran, Harding or Ramjattan or a decent candidate like them, someone like Moses Nagamootoo or Raphael Trotman, we will have more of the kind of scams reported in and the kind of loathsome pictures flashed on your front and inside pages taking place in this country.
We need to put an end to scams that make a few become instantly rich when they cutting deals with the ‘biggies’ in government, who in turn get their kickback – all at the expense of the poor and working class.
Let us support Harding, Ramjattan and Ramkarran as the likely presidential candidates for their parties.
