Under the theme, “Universal Access and Human Rights” the Guyana Red Cross Society hosted an inter-school impromptu speaking competition at the Guyana Red Cross Society Headquarters at Eve Leary, Kingston, Wednesday.
The event launched the Anti-Stigma and Discrimination Campaign ‘Come Closer’ which served to mark World AIDS Day 2010 which was observed yesterday.
The competition saw a total of 15 schools from Regions Three and Four participating. Some of the schools included Christ Church Secondary, Zeeburg Secondary, Patentia Secondary, St John’s College, West Demerara Secondary, President’s College, Diamond Secondary, Tutorial High, St Stanislaus College and Cummings Lodge Secondary.
Some of the questions and topics raised at the competition included: How does social pressure affect People Living With HIV and AIDS (PLWHA)? Should parents and teachers of HIV positive students be notified? Should PLWHA be made to live separately from the rest of students? What is the significance of World AIDS Day? Should HIV positive students be allowed to access public education? How is HIV not transmitted?
The first place prizes were given to Kevin Mohan of St. Stanislaus College who received a trophy for his school and a notebook computer. The second place went to Neon Barry of Christ Church Secondary who received a trophy for his school and a $25,000.00 voucher.
The third place went to Marissa Christiani of Zeebury Secondary. She received a trophy for her school and $15,000.00 voucher, while each competitor received a certificate of participation and each school received hampers.
The vouchers are redeemable at Austin’s Book Services and prizes were compliments of the GRCS.
At the event some of the works done by the GRSC were on display for viewing.
