Amid serenading from the Guyana Police Force Steel Orchestra and a flatteringly decorated Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, the much-anticipated National Table Tennis Championships were ushered in officially yesterday with a pumped-up Opening Ceremony.
It was clear that the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) wanted to make a statement with the level of decor that went into the occasion. From all indications, that announcement was given with a unanimous agreement that the Championships are here.
President of the GTTA, Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene indicated that he, in his first term at the helm of the association, had the mandate to ensure that the Championships return after two years of absence from the association’s calendar of events.
Among those present at the forum were Director of Sport, Neil Kumar and Banks DIH Banks Beer Manager, Brian Choo-Hen. Greene said that the call from several quarters to have the event returned was welcomed and it was his duty to make it happen.
He lauded the effort of his Executive in executing various tasks leading up the Championships. It was on that note that the GTTA President believes that the association can deliver all its calendar programmes and there were several that he highlighted.
Greene spoke of the need to develop table tennis for various purposes, namely for both recreation and competition. He informed that plans are currently underway to send players to China to train while there will be much more tournaments in the following year.
According to the GTTA President, the association is still working on its four-year plan that will include, as its scope, every aspect of the development of the sport from players’ progression to a more robust coaching programme that has to be accommodated.
He said more players will be exposed internationally while a website would be developed to help keep stakeholders abreast with the work of the association. Greene also spoke about an outreach programme that will assist in decentralising local table tennis.
Greene commended the corporate community for supporting the sport. Director of Sport, Neil Kumar expressed elation over the fact that the National Championships has returned specifically because he believes it is where true champions emerge in the sport.
Kumar thanked the Banks DIH and the media for their respective roles in lifting the table tennis to another level. The Director of Sport said that events such as these help to create transparency since it gives the impression that the association are performing.
Banks DIH Banks Beer Manager, Choo-Hen said that the role of his company in the event has everything to do with the development of sport and youth. He noted that the beverage company has played a major role in developing sport, generally, in Guyana.
Following the opening yesterday, the action commenced in earnest in several categories with the cadets and juniors taking centre stage.
