The Ruimveldt Children Home and Care Centre (R.C.H.C.C) celebrated its Anniversary Fun Day at the NIS Ground last Saturday with several organizations competing for the various trophies in several sports disciplines.
However the most spirited contested events were cricket and football where youngsters from Love and Faith and the La Grange Church of the Nazarene ended the day victorious to edge out R.C.H.C.C, Prophecy One, West Ruimveldt Wesleyan and other organizations who came out to support the noble cause of the Children’s Home.
In a thrilling finish to the softball T/20 competition, La Grange Nazarene came out as victors over Love and Faith. Due to bad weather and time, the format of the game was reduced to 20 balls per innings with 5 balls constituting an over.
In extremely wet conditions, Love and Faith won the toss and elected to bat first and set off to a strong start scoring 13 runs in the first over, however smart bowling from La Grange Nazarene restricted Love and Faith to just 19 for 5 at the end of their innings.
In reply, La Grange Nazarene began their run chase scoring 11 runs off the first over but slowed down tremendously in the middle overs to take the game to the final over. Needing 3 runs from 3 balls to claim victory was not as easy as it appears given the damp pitch and wet outfield, however, a wide from the bowler and a four off the bat of Saheed Sulaman settled the victory for La Grange Nazarene with one ball to spare and 5 wickets in hand.
Meanwhile, Love and Faith determined to redeem themselves, won the 5 per side football competition defeating Prophecy One by scoring 3 goals while Prophecy One did not get off the mark. Love and Faith relied heavily on their star player John Harris, who did not disappoint them in anyway, scoring two of the three goals while Clayton Halley chipped in with his stylish kick to claim the third goal before the end of play.
Chairman of RCHCC Rev. Ivan Williams said, due to the weather, the event did not generate enough revenue as expected but thanked all those who came out to support and sponsor the event.
