The Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) Under-17 cricket team will tour Trinidad next Easter and National Under-17 Coach Orin Bailey and Demerara Under-17 Coach Gavin Nedd have begun preparations for the trip to the Twin Island.
Nedd, a former National off-spinner and Bailey, a former right-handed batsman who was Guyana’s trainer during their tour to South Africa for the last Champions League T20 tournament, informed Kaieteur Sport that tours such as these are very important for the mental development of Guyana’s young players before they get into national under-19 and First-Class teams since playing in different conditions and staying together as a team are key requirements as their careers progress.
Nedd and Bailey have joined forces to hold a fund raising Bar-B-Q and Christmas Lime at the DCC ground in Queenstown on Sunday December 19.
Nedd explained that in addition to acquiring sponsors for the trip, he wants to get the players involved in helping to make the tour possible and disclosed that the youngsters will put on a cricket demonstration while a winner take all dominoes competition and a raffle will form a part of the day’s activities during the fund raising event.
“Air fare, meals and accommodation is very expensive but we want to give our youths the best possible chance of improving their cricket with overseas tours and we would be very
grateful for any assistance anyone would want to give,” Bailey, a former National youth cricketer, said.
Nedd, who took 29 wickets from 14 First-Class games and who played at the club level in Trinidad, encouraged families to come out on December 19 to support the venture and said that those desirous of making a contribution to the DCC youth team’s tour can contact the club on telephone number 226-2006.
