– hopes to start work immediately
After almost a year of dormancy, football in Georgetown is set to resume sometime soon after a newly elected body was voted in yesterday, at Olympic House on High Street.
Lieutenant Commander Vernon Burnett was elected to serve as President of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) and he will be supported by three Vice-Presidents in clothing distributor Mark Phillips, telecommunications specialist Ivor Thompson and banker Kwabina Griffith.
Customs Broker Christopher Matthias was elected to serve as Secretary, businessman Dexter Schultz- Treasurer and Fiona Hamilton as Assistant Secretary Treasurer.
Burnett speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly after being elected to the post thanked his executive for placing their faith in him, adding that because structured football was absent in the City for the entire year, they will commence work immediately to devise plans for a bright start in 2011.
“Our short term plan is to get football going again in Georgetown very early and we will almost immediately begin to solicit sponsorship to that effect,” Burnett said.
Among the other main area of focus according to the President is to initiate a robust plan for youth football.
“Not having senior football played in the City severely hampered the development of the junior level in the sport because there was nothing for them to aspire to,” Burnett lamented.
He said he was extremely confident that the team of executives will work assiduously to get the game going as soon as possible, while pointing out that teamwork would be a vital component for success.
Burnett indicated that they will endeavour to have the clubs play an important role in the process of moving the sport forward.
“We cannot do it all alone, we will seek to empower the clubs so that they will feel the importance of being a part of the development, while the aim will also be to help them become more organised and improve their structure.”
Commander Burnett extended thanks to the respective clubs for expressing their confidence in his ability to steer them in a positive direction during his term in office, adding that their support will be crucial for smooth and effective delivery of the sport.
He also acknowledged the support of the Guyana Football Federation which helped in facilitating the process for elections after the Interim Management Committee’s tenure had expired.
