A new drainage pump station at Greenfield, East Coast Demerara, is expected to be completed in a few weeks, officials said on Friday.
The two pumps and the station, expected to double the current capacity of drainage for the area, are expected to cost around $156M and will be discharging up to 120 cubic feet of water per second.
Inspection works were carried out at the site by Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, Lionel Wordsworth, on Friday.
The contract is being executed by Harrychand Tulsie and supervised by CEMCO.
According to Persaud, drainage and irrigation workers are stepping up inspections across the country in wake of above normal rainfall this month.
The hydromet department has predicted that rainfall will be 70 per cent more than preceding years.
However, the Minister has said that he is not satisfied with the pace of work. The project was expected to have been completed but weather, mobilisation and procurement of materials were all given as reasons for the lateness.
Additionally, part of the land at Greenfield where the pump station is being built was private property and this took some time to be sorted out.
The Minister noted that the several other works are happening in the drainage sector. These include programmes at Linden, the Essequibo Coast, Leguan Island, and in Berbice.
Almost 3,000 workers across the country, under a community enhancement project, are working to clear drains and monitor systems, among other things.
