The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Banks DIH sponsored National Championships will open today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with players and clubs competing in the most acclaimed event for the most prestigious prizes locally.
Sponsored under Banks DIH Vita Malt brand, the National Championships will conclude what has indeed been a very active season for the sport. It is scheduled to be formally opened at 8:30 am this morning with all the respective stakeholders present.
The competition will look to sort out those who will be deemed champions in the Cadets and the Junior categories today and tomorrow before the seniors take the floor next weekend. It is one of the competitions that the GTTA calendar would welcome.
According to reports reaching Kaieteur Sport, the management team for the Championships has put a lot of work into making the event one of the biggest contests. It has been on the forefront of carded competitions under the new leadership of the association.
As such, all Guyanese players, whether living abroad or in Guyana, was invited to compete in the event to fit the ideal of the association, which was to host the event to truly reflect a national challenge with all the top players competing for supremacy.
So far, only United States-based national female champion, Michelle John has reneged on competing in the event owing to university commitments. With that apart, according to reports, the tournament will be home to all the other premier players.
Some of the players that will be on show today include Caribbean U-13 female champion, Chelsea Edghill, Jamaal Duff, Elishaba Johnson, Jeremy Singh, Nigel Bryan and a host of other top Cadet and Junior players.
United States-based, Brad and Brandon Belle are also expected to compete. The twins arrived in Guyana and are ready for the competition.
Next weekend, the ‘big boys’ and ‘girls’ take the floor where national men’s singles champion, Godfrey Munroe will be heavily challenged from a strong field. United States-based Paul David is among those that will be coming up against Munroe.
Others include, Christopher Franklin and Idinho Lewis. With the absence of John in the women’s competition, Trenace Lowe is a strong favorite to win and with Natalie Cummings and Chelsea Edghill all pressing for their first title at the senior national level.
