Following a three year hiatus, competitive football at the senior level in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden is up and running with the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA) 2010/2011 Senior League.
Former League Champions Bakewell Topp XX holds a slim lead with 10 points with Netrockers, just added to the Kashif & Shanghai roster trailing by a single point.
The League officially kicked off on Sunday November, 7 with a Day of Sports & Food Sale at the Bayroc Community Center Ground sponsored by Ansa McAl Trading. This event exhibited the talents of the footballers in Region 10 through activities which included athletics, dribbling, tackling, obstacle course and beach soccer.
Funds from the Food Sale will be channeled towards the development of each Club according to a UDFA release.
In an effort to spread the development of the game and to highlight the usefulness of community Grounds, the UDFA has taken a decision to play games on the outskirts of the Bauxite Mining Town at venues including Bayroc Community Center Ground, Christianburg Community Center Ground and Linden Foundation Secondary School Ground.
At the Opening Ceremony Mr. Horace James, CEO of the Linmine Secretariat stated that he is pleased with the resurgence of football in Linden and the UDAF can count on his continued and committed support towards the development of the grounds and the sport in the Linden Community.
UDFA Vice President Mr. Sharma Solomon urged all Clubs to stay committed to the development of the game.
The main sponsors of the League are Guyana Geology & Mines Commission (GGMC), Mr. Wayne Ebba, Mr. Mark Grimmond, Mr. Shawn Hopkinson, Mr. Bonnie Davis, Mr. Horace James (Linmine Secretariat), Mr. Andrew McBean (NCN Linden) and Mr. Gorden Gumbs (Linden Hospital Complex).
The winner of the League will cart off $200,000 with $100,000 and $50,000 set aside for the second and third placed teams. The Most Valuable Player and the Player to score the most goals will each receive trophies.
The League will take a break from this Sunday and recommence on January to facilitate the successful staging of the 21st Kashif & Shanghai Football Tournament.
