The local U-17 footballers preparing for the national duties in the second leg of the U-17 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) World Cup qualifiers have intensified their training and coach of the squad Sampson Gilbert is confident that the lads would replicate the scintillating performance witnessed in the first round.
Mr. Gilbert endorsed the squad while saying that he is confident that they would go on to win the second leg of the tournament scheduled to get underway in the Dominican Republic from December 8-12 next.
In the first round the team had defeated Aruba 7-0 while inflicting a 5-0 drubbing on Dominica. The local squad then drew their final encounter with the Netherlands Antilles (2-2). The local lads are now focused and Mr. Gilbert is brimming with confidence that they would continue to do this country proud.
The team is now encamped at the DYC, Subryanville under the capable management of Gilbert and physiotherapist, Alicia Fortune and they are also backing themselves to do well.
According to Gilbert, the team is a well balanced unit and their level of play is way above the competition. However, Gilbert admitted that the further the team advances into the tournament, the tougher the competition. He said that the local team is equipped with three Canadian based players that are quite capable of matching the skills of the other teams. These players are Jordon Roberts, a very capable striker, Kaleel Ricketts, an attacking mid fielder and Kaneil Caesar.
The coach also singled out Vice Captain Rolex Martin, a youngster from the Rupununi Savannahs whose work ethic has been astounding.
“Based on the individual talent and the work ethic of the players I am assured that we will progress into the 2011 World Cup,” said Gilbert.
The team continued their preparations with a hectic workout at the Plaisance Community Center Ground yesterday afternoon.
