Four-year-old Rihanna will celebrate yet another Christmas without her mother this year, but at least she has her father, Dwayne Stanford. Stanford himself has the satisfaction of knowing that justice has been served to the men who so brutally stole from him his common-law wife, Donnelle Goodluck three years ago.
In a cruel and senseless act of violence perpetrated on September 14, 2007, two men, one of them a friend of Dwayne Stanford, broke into his home, stole items and cash amounting to BDS$800 and murdered Donelle, a fellow Guyanese.
The two men were Dellon Dexter David and Shane Andre Rowland, both 30, both Guyanese. David, a former member of the Guyana Defence Force was sentenced to 14 years and ten months for the unlawful killing of his friend’s girlfriend and 11 years and ten months for aggravated burglary.
His sentences became effective immediately after they were handed down on November 22,last in the Supreme Court in Barbados; they will run concurrently. Meanwhile, his accomplice Rowland, was sentenced to five years and ten months for aggravated burglary.
Earlier in the proceedings, David was accused of the murder but he pleaded guilty instead to manslaughter. He and Rowland both pleaded guilty to the charge of aggravated robbery.
According to the Nation in Barbados, the matter was heard by Madame Justice Elneth Kentish who described the incident as “most egregious and reprehensible”.
During the proceedings it was revealed that both men had planned to rob Dwayne Stanford. David had invited Rowland to stay at his home the night before the robbery since David lived near Stanford in Lakes, St. Andrew.
Justice Kentish also pointed out that the men waited until Dwayne had left home, knowing that only Donelle would have been at home. She went on to recount that when they went into the house, David picked up a kitchen knife and stabbed the young mother in her neck, after she had opened the door with her ten-month-old baby in her arms.
Donelle had become unconscious after the first wound but after she regained consciousness, she was stabbed again by David who then proceeded to place the baby in the bed. The Judge noted that it was as yet unknown what psychological trauma the baby suffered. “We do not know how that incident has been seared into her at that tender age.”
The two men proceeded to ransack the house for money and other valuables and eventually left about 10:00hrs or 11:00hrs with utter disregard for Donelle’s well-being. Neither of them bothered to call an ambulance for the young woman. Instead she was discovered by her brother-in-law at 17:00hrs that day as she lay bleeding in the same bed with her baby.
He called Sandford who in turn notified the police.
Justice Kentish said that in David’s case, a custodial sentence would be justified to protect the public from the mastermind of the robbery. In Rowland’s case, she noted that he went along with David’s plan to rob and although he did not participate in the incident that led to the mother’s death, he was content to leave her there without seeking any assistance for her.
The three years that both men have been on remand were also taken into account in their sentencing.
