In its continued efforts to aid the delivery of public health care, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) yesterday donated items valued at more than $16M to the Ministry of Health.
Presenting the substantial endowment yesterday was UNFPA Director, Daniel Baker, who noted that UNFPA has over the years been focusing its support on the area of reproductive health. And these he said include the areas of family planning and maternal health with a view of reducing the number of women who die during childbirth.
“What we are doing today is to turn over these pieces of equipment that are valued about US$80,000. We also have in the pipelines an additional amount which is going to add up to about US$200,000 worth of equipment and supplies.”
Among the donation yesterday included items for the Maternal and Child Health Unit, the Regional Health Services, Health Sciences Education, the Adolescent Health and Wellness Department and the Georgetown Public Hospital.
And there were both literature and contraceptives to aid family planning efforts, HIV prevention as well as equipment to help reduce maternal death, Baker said.
There were other items to help boost the operation of various public health facilities. “We hope and we feel sure that this is in response to the needs of the Ministry to what they need to help improve the health of the people of Guyana.”
According to Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, who received the items on behalf of the Ministry, the Ministry is extremely grateful for the partnership it has with UNFPA.
He revealed that UNFPA could be regarded as the Ministry’s main partner in terms of maternal health. And over the past year support in this area has been intensified, Minister Ramsammy disclosed.
“It comes at a time when we perhaps have reached at a stage where we couldn’t make further improvement given the resources and competence level that we have in our country.
“With the resources we had we made incremental improvement but we have reached the stage where more has to be done if we are going to the next level and UNFPA has become a significant partner in reaching that next level.”
