Defeat Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets by 6 wickets
Albion Community Centre Cricket Club successfully defended their Tenelec Inc. 50 overs title on Sunday last when they defeated Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets in the 2010 final by 6 wickets.
Witnessed by one of the largest crowd to support a first division final, the game started some two and half hours late due to a wet pitch despite no evidence of any rainfall around the venue, bowling off at 12:00hrs instead of 09:30hrs which resulted in the overs being reduced to 40.
Albion won the toss and as expected due to the condition of the pitch, invited the visitors to take first strike. Rose Hall Town were toppled for 133 off 37.3 overs as the Albion spinners spun webs around the batsmen on a moist pitch.
Renwick Batson and Esuan Crandon were the joint top scorers with 25 each, receiving support from Dominic Rickie 18, Eon Hooper 16 and Assad Fudadin 15. Bowling for Albion Sewnarine Chattergoon took 2-13 off 5.3 overs, Veerasammy Permaul 2-21 and Narsingh Deonarine 2-24.
In reply Albion achieved victory in the 34th over ending on 134-4. National opener Sewnarine Chattergoon led the victory charge with a composed 52 (2 fours) and was supported by Deonarine 25 and Ranga Latchana 21.
Jonathan Foo ended the match in style with an aggressive 22 not out that included two sixes and a four.
Leading the bowling for the losers were off-spinner Troy Mathieson 2-26; Esuan Crandon and Eon Hooper took a wicket each.
Chattergoon was named the man-of-the-finals and received $15,000 while Albion carried home the beautiful Tenelec Inc. trophy and $100,000. Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets who lost for the second successive year top Albion received $60,000 and a trophy.
President of the Berbice Cricket Board Mr. Keith Foster at the presentation praised Mr. Bobby Deonarine and his partner Mr. Tom Gruentzel for supporting the development of Berbice Cricket and expressed the hope that the relationship would continue in the future.
The President proudly stated that the Ancient County plays more cricket than all the other Counties combined and this was because of the commitment of members of the Berbice Cricket Board.
Officials of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club have indicated that they would be writing a letter of complaint to the Berbice Cricket Board over what they view as a strange situation concerning the pitch for the finals and expressed frustration at what they say was unfair.
A senior official of the Berbice Cricket Board also expressed disappointment that the large crowd had to wait two and half hours before the game started despite the outfield being bone dry, yet the pitch was very soft due to excess preparation moisture.
