Reggae Boyz blank Golden Jaguars 4-0; book semis place along with Guadeloupe

Stade de Riviere Pilote, Martinique: Jamaica had already qualified as Group winners and as a result coach Theodore Whitmore made a number of changes to the line-up. With Guadeloupe winning the earlier match the Golden Jaguars needed a win to go through as the second place team. Unfortunately for Jaguars fans they did not come close to troubling a very strong Jamaica squad who were the far better team on the night. Jamaica showed their strength and depth with another relatively smooth victory to take them to the semifinals with Grenada having achieved maximum points.
Despite Guyana requiring victory they opened the match with a cautious formation leaving one main striker upfront. They seemed content to let Jamaica keep possession and come at them. Jamaica did so and looked very comfortable probing and moving the ball around in front of the Guyana defence.
The Reggae Boyz looked dangerous on a number of occasions and played some very good football down the left to create their first good chance of the match. It forced a save from Williams in the Jaguars goal but a comfortable one in the end.
The opening came on 42 minutes when Ryan Johnson won a free kick on the left, it was a very good delivery from Keammar Daley, who was voted Samsung Man of the Match, all the way to the far post where Johnson was there to unselfishly head the ball back across goal for Richards to head home the simplest of chances into an empty net. A just reward for Jamaica’s more sustained attacking play.
The 2nd half resumed in similar vein to the first with Jamaica maintaining control despite the fact that the Jaguars needed victory to survive. The Reggae Boyz quality was proving too much for Guyana as they just could not gain enough quality possession to really trouble the strong Jamaican defence. The gulf in class was becoming more evident as the match progressed.
On 49 minutes a tremendous effort from Luton Sheldon to reach a ball that seemed destined to go out over the end line and play a super cross from the right into the danger area where Marvin Morgan pounced to drive home a shot from close range. It was only Morgan’s second international appearance so it will do his confidence the world of good to get on the scoring trail.
It was the 65th minute when Guyana created their first clear opening of the night, Dwain Jacobs sprung the offside trap and was racing through on the left, as he was about to shoot the Jamaican defender did just enough to deflect the effort for a corner. From the corner another chance materialized when from the 2nd phase when a ball was played across the face of goal begging for the Jaguars to get a touch but nobody could connect.
Ten minutes after this Jamaica put the result beyond doubt when this time it was Ryan Johnson who did well to dig a cross from the left to find Morgan in an enormous amount of space just outside the 6 yard box, he had time to take a touch and finish with ease. The Reggae Boyz were home and dry at this stage and the team cheering the most was most likely Guadeloupe as this result meant that they have gone through in 2nd place after defeating Antigua & Barbuda 1-0 earlier in the night compliments of a Jean Luc Lamboude goal 4 minutes to half time. Eric Vernon capped off the night for Jamaica when he rattled the net with goal number 4 on the stroke of full time.
With three relatively comfortable victories in the Group fans must consider Jamaica as favourites to recapture their title. If the voting on www.digicelfootball.com is anything to go by it is certainly the case, and it would take a brave man to bet against them at this stage. Also, well done to Guyana who were the only team who made it through to the Digicel Cup Finals from Stage 1.
