Malteenoes Table Tennis’ (TT) team is reeking confidence ahead of tomorrow’s commencement of the National Championships, while its premier player, Chelsea Edghill has confirmed that she will be going against the seniors for the Women’s Singles title.
Still a junior sensation, Edghill believes that she has the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-18 titles in the bag and her primary focus will be on creating history by becoming the youngest player to ever secure the prestigious Women’s Singles accolade in Guyana.
“The possibility of me winning is like eight out of ten, but then there is Trenace Lowe. I am very nervous and careful, but also enthusiastic. I do think, though, that I have a good chance,” Edghill told Kaieteur Sport at Malteenoes Sports Club last night.
The national player, who competed at the Pan American juniors in October, said her preparations have been “good” and included drills such as multiple-balls; work on hand and foot speeds and a lot of fitness and personal exercises ahead of the national contest.
“I think I can beat Trenace and (Natalie) Cummings if I use my head and execute my shots well I can beat them,” Edghill said when asked how she is approaching her challengers for the female senior title, adding that she definitely has the talent to win.
Following the disclosure that the Michelle John will not be defending her title this year, the title in the category became a toss up. However, 2008 finalist, Lowe will be arriving in Guyana soon from the United States to play for her one elusive accolade.
Table Tennis Coach at Malteenoes, Dwain Dick told this newspaper that their preparation for the national tournament was part of an ongoing programme at the club. He said that the unit that has more Cadet and Junior players will be ready for the challenge.
“Well as it relates to the nationals, we are approaching it as just a tournament, preparations have been very good; we have been working since before the Pan American event and our focus is the Caribbean Championships so nationals is warm-up,” Dick said.
He expressed confidence over the club’s chances of bringing in titles especially in the U-10 Boys group where favourite, Jeremy Singh will compete and, as mentioned before, in the Girls’ U-13, U-15 and U-18 categories where Edghill will be trumps.
Dick also mentioned the likes of Kyle Edghill, Stephan Corlette, David Duncan among his squad that will be competing in the mega event. “Those players will upset some recognised players this weekend at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall,” Dick held.
