The time for mouthing off is over and the boxers scheduled to participate in the 9th edition of the ProAm boxing extravaganza at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will now have to put up or shut up.
The card promises much but boxing fans may have to endure a small bit of disappointment following the news that the Venezuelan fighter that was to have opposed Barbadian based Guyanese heavyweight CABOFE champion, Shawn Cox, is no longer arriving for the bout. The organizers revealed that Cox has arrived for the bout but they had experienced several glitches in bringing the Venezuelan to these shores.
Cox’s manager, Sam Layne, had undertaken the responsibility to sponsor that bout but it seemed as though negotiations with the Venezuelan fell through at the last moment.
However, Shawn Pyle has been drafted in and will oppose Barbadian Miguel Antoine, while Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes would be in action once again against Kurt Bess whose original opponent, Anthony Augustin, was debarred from fighting since he is mandated to stay out of the ring for a minimum of three months following his devastating knockout loss to Cox just under one month ago.
Sharon Ward will also grace the ring once again for a highly anticipated slugfest against Pauline London. The latter fighter has been improving leaps and bounds while the former is noted for her determination and grit. A stiff battle is therefore envisaged.
Troy Lewis and Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy will also clash in the battle of the knockout specialists. Lewis had earlier chalked up the coveted record of scoring the fastest knockout when he disposed of Rudy Fraser just over 2 minutes of the first stanza. Hardy had effortlessly erased that record with a 20 second shutdown of Mark Murray. Now the two pugilists will square off, both intent on retaining or regaining the coveted record as the better knockout specialist.
Joel McRae, on the redemption trail after a lackluster performance against James Walcott that netted him a draw, will don gloves with Edmond DeCleau in what is expected to be an action packed encounter. The latter fighter would be well remembered for his three epic encounters against Kwesi ‘Assassin’ Jones.
Boxing buffs are reminded that the admission price is $1,000 while those unable to attend may tune in to NCN television for a live broadcast. The card is promoted by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control in association with NCN television and the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports. Fight time is 19:00hrs.
