– John confirms absence from National C/ships
Guyana’s international female table tennis star, Michelle John has confirmed that she will not be able to defend the national singles’ title she won two years ago owing to her studies in the United States, which immediately opened the floodgates in the category.
John, who defeated Trenace Lowe to win the title in 2008, was expected to defend her accolade in the upcoming mega National Table Tennis Championships, which starts at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall this weekend and continues with the seniors next weekend.
“Hi Edison, I saw your article about the ‘nationals’, this is just to confirm that I will not be home for that tournament due to my studies,” John said in an email yesterday. She said her table tennis season has ended and she won’t be playing until next year.
John raised eyebrows this year when she defeated the number 10 seed at the Central America and Caribbean (CAC) Games as a member of the Guyana national team. Her performance against the Puerto Rican, Jerica Marrero received several acclamations.
Most notably, one of the International Table Tennis Federation’s (ITTF) Staff Writers had stated that the performance had everything to do with John’s mental preparedness, which meant that the player was certainly the favourite to win the local title again.
“Maybe John’s mental strength came from the fact that she is studying psychology at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri, United States of America,” the ITTF website said about John when she defeated Marrero in Puerto Rico.
John’s absence from the most prestigious local table tennis tournament opens an opportunity for the US-based, Lowe and locally-based, Natalie Cummings. Both players will be out to grab their first national Women’s Singles title in the tournament.
So definitely following the end of the National Championships there will be a new female champ and Kaieteur Sport understands that a young star is contemplating whether or not she will contest the senior class to make things even more interesting.
