The pair of Phillip Squires /Godfrey Lowden are the Pegasus Men’s Doubles Champions after they survived an epic showdown against the duo of Andy Goveia /Ezra Sue-Ho to win 6-7 ( 8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 as play in this year’s Open Tennis Championships continued at the Hotel’s Hardcourts.
In what has to go down as one of the most competitive and exciting game in recent times on the local scene, the top seeded team of Squires / Lowden were able to narrowly defeat upstarts Goveia / Sue Ho.
The teams matched each other point for point with Squires and the usually erratic Goveia leading the way.
Goveia saved his best for the finals and put down some huge first and second serves which allowed Sue-Ho to easily put away winners at the net.
Veteran Lowden rolled back the years and pulled off several unlikely winners, whilst Squires was consistent as usual with his play.
The eventual score-line underlined how close the match was and it was only in the third set when Sue-Ho had to serve at 5-5 and twice double faulted under the pressure that the potential for a third straight tie-breaker was avoided.
Squires easily served out the set and gave the defending champions the title.
Meanwhile, more excitement is expected to follow as top seeded Phillip Squires squares off against number two seed Jeremy Miller today at 17:30 hrs in the marquee Men’s final.
The Women’s final will see defending champion Carol Humphrey taking on junior player Krystal Sukra as the tournament winds down to a close.
