Kurt Spencer netted a quartet of goals as Potaro Strikers Football Club hammered Lazio 6-1 on Sunday at the Bartica Community Centre in the Bartica Football Association (BFA) Division One League which continued last weekend with four exciting matches in Region Seven.
The convincing victory ensured Potaro Strikers, who registered back-to-back wins over the weekend, advanced to the second round of the competition after they had gotten past Rising Stars FC 3-2 on Saturday to make an early impression in the tournament.
Action over the weekend began on Friday when River’s View FC beat Mil Ballers 4-2 but lost to Wolves 3-2 in the 2nd match of Sunday’s ‘double header’ which was watched by a vocal crowd.
At the end of the first round only the top four teams will advance to the second round and Mil Ballers with two games remaining and only 3 points, must win their remaining games while Lazio FC, yet to get off the points table, must win all three of their remaining games if they hope to advance to the next round.
On Friday fans in the mining town saw River’s View’s Andel Norton score in the 6th & 79th minutes and got support from his younger brother Aloysius Edwards, who found the back of the net in the 31st minute and John O’Selmo who scored in the 38th minute to set up the River View win. C. James and S. Da Silver scored consolation goals for Mil Ballers in their 4-2 loss.
On Saturday Potaro Strikers FC beat Rising Stars FC 3-2 as Malcolm Augustus netted twice (23rd & 71st) and Denon David scored in between those goals in the 39th minute.
Rising Stars’ goals came from Sherwin John and Trevon Christian in the 10th and 60th minutes but these efforts were not enough to put them ahead at the final whistle.
The next day in the opening game of the ‘double-header’ Potaro Strikers FC pulverized Lazio FC 6-1 as the only goal for Lazio came off the boot of Ron Jones in the 46 minute. But apart from that success Potaro Strikers were ‘all over’ their opponents as the talented Spencer went on a goal scoring spree.
The lively Spencer beat Lazio’s custodian in the 23rd, 56th, 59th & 71st minutes while Malcolm Augustus added to Lazio’s misery by securing himself 2 goals in either half of the game.
Sunday’ 2nd game saw Wolves United getting past River View 3-2 with Wolves’ Travis Garraway scoring the game’s first goal 17 minutes into the first half.
In the second half River’s View retaliated with 2 goals which came off the boot of Andel Norton and Romel Prince in the 43rd and 51st minutes respectively.
Randy Jackson scored in the 56th minute before Garraway scored for the 2nd time in the contest when he hit home the winning Goal for Wolves in the 65 minute. The action continues this weekend.
