The Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday announced that the Government of Guyana has received the agreement of the Government of Kuwait for Mohamed Ali Odeen Ishmael, CCH, to be appointed resident Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Guyana to the State of Kuwait
This, the Ministry said, in keeping with a commitment to strengthen relations between Guyana and Kuwait following the visits of His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo and the Prime Minister of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Nasser Mohammed Al Hamed Al Jaber Al Saber, the Government of Guyana will establish a diplomatic mission in Kuwait.
Ambassador Ishmael served in Washington from June 1993 to October, 2003 and was appointed as Ambassador to Venezuela in November, 2003 where he is currently serving.
He is expected to take up his appointment in Kuwait, shortly.
Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, in October last announced that Guyana has taken a decision to establish an embassy in oil rich Kuwait.
This decision follows an official state visit by Head of State, Bharrat Jagdeo, earlier this year to that country and a subsequent visit by the Kuwaiti premier to Guyana.
This is the first time that Guyana will have such a level of representation in that region. According to Rodrigues-Birkett the Kuwaiti government has agreed to assist and provide some resources for the establishment of the Embassy.
Minister Rodrigues-Birkett did point out that the Ambassador will more than likely act as ambassador to some other Middle Eastern countries.
Guyana and Kuwait have signed several bilateral agreements and it is expected that with the establishment of an Embassy there will be deepened ties with the region.
She said that the move was in keeping with the policy of embracing relations with non-traditional partners.
“We are confident that the establishment of this embassy in Kuwait will further strengthen bi-laterals not only with Kuwait but from that base other countries in the Middle East.”
Rodrigues-Birkett also announced that Guyana will be upgrading its representation in Brazil with the setting up of a consulate in Boa Vista.
