Tournament important to Guyana’s Regional T20 campaign says GCB head
By Sean Devers
In what is expected to be his last year at the helm of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Chetram Singh stressed the importance of this year’s expanded Carib/Pepsi T20 cricket competition which starts on Friday with a ‘double-header’ at the Guyana National Stadium.
Singh, the GCB head since 1991, thanked Ansa McAL (distributors of Carib Beer) and the Demerara Distillers Limited (distributors of Pepsi) for their continued support of Guyana’s premier T20 competition for the third year during the official launching of the 2010 competition at the GCB secretariat yesterday.
Singh said that sponsorship is critical to the development of cricket locally especially at a time when many business entities are not able to offer the type of financial support needed due to the recent economic downturn.
The GCB head also announced that this year a Rest team will be included in the competition which will give the national selectors more players to look at as they the Guyana team to defend their Caribbean T20 title next month in Antigua and Barbados.
“The Carib/Pepsi competition is a very important tournament and this year it is even more important since it will be used to select the team to play in the Caribbean T20. As you know, three foreign teams…Canada and English County teams Hampshire and Somerset will also be participating which should make the competition tougher to win than it was this year,” Singh said.
Singh however added that the top-placed regional team in the competition will represent Guyana in next year’s Champions League tournament in India but that Guyana needed to win to prove that they were the real champions.
Two matches will be played per day in the Carib/Pepsi competition on the first three days (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) at the Stadium with the first game starting at 15:00hrs and the other one at 19:00hrs.
The 3rd place play-off and the Final are set for Friday December 10 and while fans will be admitted free on the first three days, $500 is the entrance fee for the final day.
The two leading Beverage companies have combined for a $2.8 million sponsorship for the four-team competition which also involves the three county teams (Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo) and $500,000 will be spent on prize money and trophies.
Each player from each of the four teams will be paid a participation fee as is usually done at the Inter-County level while all players will be given playing shirts by the GCB.
Market Manager of the GCB Ramsay Ali disclosed that once the finalists are known, an aggressive advertisement campaign will be done for the entire next week promoting the Final.
Plenty of ‘beyond the boundary’ attractions for the entire family will be available including music, dancing girls and lots of Food and beverage bars.
Ansa McAl’s Public Relations Officer Darshanie Yussuf made the token presentation on behalf of both sponsors while DDL’s Brands Manager Alexis Crawford urged the fans to come out in their numbers to support the players as they strive for supremacy.
“Pepsi is pleased to be on board partnering with the GCB and Carib for this tournament. DDL and Pepsi are always pleased to be on board with cricket and sports in Guyana and we encourage to spectators to full up the Stadium and may the best team win,” Crawford added.
