Dear Editor,
The spate of violent crimes perpetrated monthly by bandits against defenseless hard working citizens has followed a continuous pattern since the Burnham dictatorship.
How can citizens forget the past atrocities committed by Rabbi Washington and his thugs; kick down the door bandits; cycle gangs with bicycle chains terrorizing people; looting, burning, sexual harassment and murder during street protests, and the mayhem and murder after the jail break by so-called freedom fighters, aided and abetted by the army and some with a political agenda.
In the meanwhile the government seems totally incompetent, incapable or impotent to halt this situation, and the onslaught continues.
Must Guyanese just roll over and accept this assault knowing that in some case the police are in complicity, evidenced by the lethargic response that gives the bandits sufficient time to escape?
And, in all of this, what is the position of the opposition parties, GHRA, ACDA et al, and more particularly our venerable social scientist whose silence may be understandable having denounced his ethnicity.
And, not surprisingly, those who support these murderers, thieves and rapists are using lack of jobs, and deprivation of opportunities to justify such behaviour. So, what about those countless people living in villages with little or no amenities, who are deprived of similar opportunities? Should they pick up AK rifles and rob innocent people, or as evidence has shown, they rather pick up a castnet, fork, hoe, or shovel and find themselves in some gainful activity.
In order to stop these parasites, citicens should stop being so docile and condescending and defend themselves by whatever means, even if it means resorting to poison-tipped arrows or long tipped spears.
