The Port Mourant Turf club situated at Port Mourant, Corentyne Berbice will on Sunday December 12 be the centre of attraction in the horseracing circle. The occasion will be the grand one day, seven event end of year horse race meet organized by the club. As such the authorities are going all out to make sure that the upcoming race meet be one of the best of the year.
The track is one of the leading venues in the country and the directors have all intentions in keeping it that way. At the moment the facilities are undergoing rehabilitation works. The track has been done over and is in excellent shape while some work is being done on the grand stand.
Close to $4 million dollars in cash and trophies are on offer and a scintillating and action packed day of racing is anticipated.
The main events on the day’s programme are the B class gallop, the three year event for Guyana and West Indies Bred Horses, the Two year old gallop for Guyana and West Indies Bred Horses, the D class sprint races. Another attractive event on the days programme will be for horses classified F and lower.
The feature B Class event has a first prize of $500,000 will see the horses galloping over a distance of 1300M. The other main event for 3yrs old horses Bred and Born in Guyana and the West Indies has $400,000 on offer for the winner and will see them battling over 1700M.
The two year open will see the top two year olds galloping over a 1200M distance for a first prize of $300,000. In the D and lower event there is also 300,000 available for the winner and the distance will be 1000M.
Another race which is expected to bring Turfites to their feet is the F and lower event which has a first prize of $240,000. The distance is 1400M.
The other races listed for the day’s programme are the ‘I’ class 1300M battle with a first prize $150,000. The I3 maiden and J class race will be contested over a distance of 1000M with the winner being presented with $120,000.
There will be trophies and other prizes for the top individual performers including Champion Jockey, stable and trainer.
