Moen Gafoor, Delon Moffatt cop GASP rural tourney

Moen Gafoor continued his dominance and spelled his way to the top prize when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP), in collaboration with the Paradise Scrabble Club staged the inaugural rural competition at Playland Enterprise ECD, Sunday morning.
He amassed 5 wins and a positive spread of 578 to relegate Colin Chichester (5 games and a positive spread of 126) to second place while Anand Mohabir extricated himself from a bunch of three players on four points apiece to close off the podium spots with a larger spread (354). Ulric Harris (248) and Bhoowal Chaitu (225) were the other two players with 4 points.
Delon Moffatt chalked up 4 games and a positive spread of 780 to take the junior honours while Jaspal Satamand closed off with 3 games and a positive spread of 203 to take the second place. The lone junior female, Shadica Mathura occupied the third podium spot with a total of 3 games and a positive spread of 33.
Meanwhile, President of GASP, Moen Gafoor expressed delight at the large turnout at the tournament. He was also pleased with the high standard of play exhibited by the novice players. The GASP President subsequently promised to place this particular tournament on the yearly calendar of activities in order to continue the development programme in the rural areas.
The players convene for the final tournament for the year, the Scrabble Scramble, sometime around mid December. In this tournament the entrance fee is pooled and presented to the winner of the tournament. The players will also continue the traditional practice sessions at the Maltenoes Cricket Club every Thursday evening starting at 19:00hrs.
