Dear Editor,
It is extremely sad and most disappointing to hear Mr. Donald Ramotar (Director at GuySuCo), challenge workers to make sacrifices, when it is clear that the board and the Government have miserably failed not only the employees and families of workers at GuySuCo, but have also failed the Guyanese people at large.
GuySuCo is yet another symptom of the repeated failures of this Government. The Directors at GuySuCo have hired the failed CEO from CLICO, who frankly should be in court answering questions to the people of this country of why she broke our insurance laws.
This situation also clearly demonstrates that there are laws for the people of this country and then there are different laws for persons associated with Government. Mr. Ramotar and Mr. Gopaul have been on the Board of GuySuCo for an extremely long time and they have overseen billions of dollars in losses last year.
I have no reason to doubt that the corporation is headed right down that path this year as well. I would assume that since they are on the Board, Messrs. Ramotar and Gopaul are part of the decision to spend US$200 million with a Chinese company that had no relative experience on a project of this stature and complexity. Mr. Editor how have these men demonstrated leadership and accountability?
It is imperative that Mr. Ramotar and Mr. Gopaul step up, ‘man up’ and say listen we have failed you we are now tendering our resignations.
This Board has overseen the dramatic sell off of GuySuCo assets to many questionable personalities including one gentleman that is under investigation by US Law Enforcement for bribing a US Congressman. He also has a rap sheet that will exceed 4-5 pages. It is extremely worrying that these are the characters that Government continues to associate with and do business with.
Can GuySuCo publish information on how many reserve lands it has disposed of and where those monies are being accounted? How was it spent or more importantly where are those monies?
Mr. Ramotar, how about showing some character, responsibility and maturity and resign from this post, which both you and Mr. Gopaul have clearly failed us at. Is this not the same Board that built several facilities that had no commercial fire suppression systems and thus when a fire hit one of the new installations it went unchecked and destroyed the new building, then a security guard at GuySuCo was fired because he could not put out the fire with a sand bucket?
It was later reported that the security Guard was given back his job after many in the press pointed out that this was a brand new facility with no sprinkler or fire suppression systems.
It does not get more blatant that this company is being run by folks with zero business acumen and or expertise in manufacturing period.
It is a very serious matter to have such failures in a major corporation in Guyana which employs in excess of 20,000 people and we have zero accountability from the top. The CEO seat seems to be a revolving chair but the Board continues to be immovable.
How can a corporation with these many failures not have a single Board Member resign? Who are the decision-makers that have ruined such a fantastic company? Don’t tell us the consultants the Board hired are responsible for these failures? Did we not manage them and hold the consultants to be accountable to the Board?
There are some serious issues here and the entire Board needs to resign immediately without further delay, before we can ask anyone to make sacrifices.
Mr. Editor it is also very disconcerting to hear rumours that GuySuCo only has nine months more of cash to run on and after the elections it is expected that the government will shut the doors on the corporation for good. I would like Government to come clean and let us know the truth, will you or will you not shut down GuySuCo after the 2011 Elections?
What guarantees are Government putting in place to ensure that this will not happen. Clearly if the same Board is in place with these extensive list of failures we cannot be reassured that this company will be viable beyond next august.
Mr. Ramotar enough of your sad tales and weary stories of sacrifice, it is time for you to go sir.
