Barbadian based Guyanese and Caribbean Boxing Federation Champion (CABOFE) heavyweight champion, Shawn Cox will headline the tenth edition of the monthly ProAm boxing card slated for Friday December 3 when he opposes Venezuelan based Columbian, Antonio Mercado, in defence of the former fighter’s WBC CABOFE cruiserweight belt when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control stages the card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Former Secretary of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Trevor Arno revealed that after strenuous negotiations the fight has been confirmed and boxing pundits can look forward to the treat in store. Despite comprising a part of the ProAm extravaganza, the bout was arranged by Cox’s manager, Sam Layne who has also agreed to pay all expenses associated with the fight. The bout would, however, fall under the auspices of the CABOFE and subject to the rules and statutes of that organisation. Shawn Pyle has also been drafted into the card and will oppose Miguel Antoine, while Sharon Ward has replaced Quinda Rogers in a heavyweight bout against Pauline London.
Mercado is currently the fourth-ranked boxer in the Latin American region in the cruiserweight division for the right to fight for the Latin American title and to be rated in the top 15 in the world. Should Cox overcome this challenge he could find himself in line for a fight for the Latin American title and possibly a world title in the near future.
Cox has so far starred on two ProAm cards winning his first bout against Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes on points before his first round shutdown of Anthony Augustin in the tenth edition of the card.
Several other bouts would comprise the card including Troy Lewis against Simeon Hardy, Kurt Best up against Anthony Augustin and Edmond DeCleau battling Joel McRae.
The card, initially scheduled for November 26, was postponed to facilitate the Union of South American Nations Summit to this Friday.
Several amateur bouts will also comprise the card including Michael April who will oppose Dewani Lampkin in the 80-84lbs category; Romano Clarke takes on David Thomas in the Junior/welterweight division while Junior/flyweights Moolchand Sankar and Kevin Allicock will clash in a bout that is expected to produce some fireworks. Ron Smith and Kelsie George will also square off in the middleweight division.
NCN Television would be carrying a live broadcast of the action while those attending the venue will be required to pay a small entrance fee of $1,000. Bell time is 20:00hrs.
