Authorities have warned of above normal spring tides from Thursday. According to the Work Services Group/Sea Defence Division of the Ministry of Public Works yesterday, residents should take the necessary precautions during the spring tide period that is expected to last from December 2 to December 9.
The predicted tide indicates above normal levels for the impending period.
The release said that several areas including East and West Bank Demerara, Mahaica and Leguan Island, Essequibo River, are vulnerable. Also included are East Coast Demerara and East Berbice.
On the East Bank Demerara, Riverview, Ruimveldt, Bagotstown, Herstelling/Farm, Craig, Diamond and Friendship were listed as the areas under special watch.
At Mahaica, the Helena/Mosquito Hall area was also highlighted. On the West Coast and West Bank Demerara, Vive La Force, Catherina/Lorenzo, Vriesland Wales/Patentia, Sister’s Village, Belle Vue, Bagotville/La Grange, Schoonord/Good Fortuin, Pouderoyen/Versailles and Vreed-en-Hoop/Plastic City could also be vulnerable.
At Leguan, Verouw Anna, Henrietta, Maryville and La Bagatelle could also see possible overtopping.
At East Berbice, Goed Bananen Land, Friends, Brothers, Lonsdale, Heathburn and Glasgow were also places that were listed as being possibly under threat.
On the East Coast, Better Hope, Montrose and Vryheid’s Lust were the areas to watch, the Ministry said.
While in the past years, there has been incidence of overtopping, within the past few months, the situation has become pronounced with several villages being flash-flooded on occasions. The sudden rise of water from the Demerara and Berbice Rivers had caught many unaware.
Over the past few months, workers had built up the embankments of several villages lining the Demerara and Mahaica River. However, it is too early to pronounce on the works until the spring tides are actually here.
Recently, vendors of the Stabroek Market were left in shock as waters sheeted over the stelling area, running as far as the Avenue of the Republic.
