GTA Collaborates in conducting training for City Tour Guides
Under the theme “Community Based Tourism: Preserving the Unique Character and Culture of Communities” the Ministry of Tourism, the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) and Wilderness Explorers conducted a City Tour Guide training as part of a series of initiatives to mark during Tourism Awareness Month 2010. The event was conducted Saturday at the Cara Lodge, Quamina Street.
Tourism students from the university were among 40 participants which also included staff of the GTA were selected for the programme.
All the participants will be certificate by the GTA.

Facilitating the training, was General Manager of Wilderness Explorers, Teri O’Brien and Operations Manager of Iwokrama, Paul Waldron.
Director of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Indranauth Haralsingh disclosed that tour guides are significant to tourists’ experience and satisfaction.
“A tour guide is a person that helps in more than one way to bring the tourists at ease, for them to understand a little more of the culture and customs of a country,” the Director said.
With Georgetown’s many attractions and rich history and culture, Haralsingh said that the organizations are now trying to build a sustainable pool of tour guides.
Training was also conducted for taxi services.
There were also sessions in culinary bookkeeping for South Rupununi villagers, and frontline training for Customs and Immigration at the Moleson Creek and the Takutu River Bridge Crossings. In addition, events management and packaging and distribution workshops were also done.
