No place for Bishoo, Sarwan again ignored
By Sean Devers
Barbadian batsman Kirk Edwards has received a maiden call up to the West Indies squad for the five-match One Day International Series and T20 International against Sri Lanka while Guyana’s leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo and experienced batman Ramnaresh Sarwan have once again been ignored by the Clyde Butts led-selection panel despite a string of recent good performances.
Edwards is one of four players who will join the squad presently playing in the three Test Series with hard hitting Limited overs specialist Kieron Pollard, left arm spinner Nikita Miller and fast bowler Ravi Rampaul being the others.
The quartet will replace Test Vice-Captain Brendan Nash, wicketkeeper Devon Thomas, pacer Nelon Pascal and off-spinner Shane Shillingford. Andre Russell, the Jamaican fast bowling all rounder who made his Test debut in the first Test against Sri Lanka, also gets his maiden ODI selection.
The 25-year-old Bishoo, who took 5-29 at Providence on his First-Class debut two years ago has 4-five wicket hauls in 71 wickets from 18 First-Class matches, was surprisingly not considered for the ‘A’ team Test series against Pakistan.
Apparently seen as a limited overs bowler by the Regional selectors who have again ignored former Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan for the ODI series while picking Rampaul who has also had fitness issues, Bishoo performed well against the Pakistanis in the ‘A’ team limited overs series after good work for Guyana in the last two regional tournaments he played.
The Albion leg-spinner was the leading wicket taker in the inaugural Caribbean T20 tournament and also bowled well in the Champions League T20 competition in South Africa where the great Sachin Tendulkar was among his victims.
In the recent Regional One-Day competition in Jamaica, which was supposedly used to pick the ODI squad for Sri Lanka, only Ryan Hinds had more wickets than Bishoo who played two matches less than the Bajan Hinds.
New Test Skipper Daren Sammy has predictably been appointed leader for the Limited Overs side and should feel more comfortable leading the One-Day side where he is expected to make a meaningful contribution as a player unlike in the Test area where he is struggling to take wickets despite long spells and has just 2 runs from three balls in the first two Tests. No Vice Captain has yet been named.
Courtney Browne, the WICB Selector on tour noted: “This will be a very important Series for us as we look ahead to the ICC Cricket World Cup, which will be played in the sub-continent in a few months. These are the last ODIs before the World Cup, so we expect the players to make the most of the opportunities. We are confident the team will do well.”
With only January’s Caribbean T20 to be staged before the World Cup squad is selected it would now be surprising if Sarwan, who has been working on his fitness and playing cricket for Guyana and club and county level in his homeland consistently since his contract snub, and is still among the best three batsmen in the region, is picked for the World Cup on Asian pitches where Sarwan has traditionally done well.
