As Guyana rallied for the campaign to end ‘violence against women’ two men found themselves in the midst of criminal charges stemming from the very act of violence against women.
The two men found themselves in front of acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry charged with assaulting their wives.
The first accused, Royston Thompson, pleaded not guilty to the charges of assault, assault causing actually bodily harm and threatening language.
The court was told by Police prosecutor Stephen Telford that on November 23, the defendant allegedly forced his wife, Shevon Thompson, who was walking along Waterloo, Georgetown, into his car and took her to the Georgetown seawall.
While there he allegedly assaulted her with a cutlass and threatened to take her life.
The prosecutor added that when the defendant had finished the assault, he took his wife back to Waterloo Street where he again assaulted her.
It was there that the commotion caught the attention of a police officer who was nearby.
The officer intervened and the accused was arrested and taken to the police station where he was charged, he prosecutor explained.
Attorney at law Ronald Burch Smith appeared on behalf of the accused and applied for bail.
In his bail application he questioned that if a cutlass was indeed used in the assault then where was it?
Telford at that point interposed and mentioned that the police are not in possession of such weapon.
Thompson was then remanded and will make his second court appearance on December 27.
The second accused, Marvin Hutson, was jailed following a charge of assault. He allegedly assaulted Tracy Hutson who was walking along Croal Street, Georgetown.
He pleaded not guilty and was unrepresented.
It is alleged that on November 23, the defendant approached Tracy Hutson and dealt her several slaps to her face and demanded that she moves back into his home.
According to Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford, Tracy Hutson and the defendant are married and were once living together.
He said that as a result of the constant abuse, the woman was forced to seek refuge elsewhere.
Telford objected to bail when the matter was first called and requested that the defendant be remanded.
Magistrate Beharry remanded the accused and adjourned the matter to last Wednesday.
On that occasion his matter was further postponed.
On Thursday, when he returned before the magistrate he was sent to spend one month in the Camp Street jail.
