Mark Singh, 35, of Essex Street, New Amsterdam was on Thursday sentenced to two years in jail by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty.
Prosecutor Corporal Roberto Figueira told the court that between November 20 and November 22, at Pitt Street, New Amsterdam, Singh broke and entered the jewelry shop operated by Dowlatram Singh and stole a quantity of items. He also stole a quantity of goldsmith tools.
The matter was reported and after some intense investigation the accused was arrested and charged.
After he was sentenced, he was overheard stating how the system was unfair. “I not guilty,” he said, “but I only pleaded guilty, because I ain’t want to die in remand. I went in there already and spend nearly two years in remand and in the end I win the case. Ah really taught I would ah get something lighter, I know how it rough.”
