The GT&T Ten10 cricket awareness program staged in collaboration with The Guyana Softball League and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport has reached the second phase and was held in Linden at the Bayrock Ground recently.
Lindeners supported the occasion and many benefited after winning giveaways and witnessing exciting games, the hallmark of the GT&T Ten10 tournament from the onset. This was GT&T’s way of giving back to the various communities that has been supporting the telephone company over the years.
The day’s proceedings started with welcoming and other remarks delivered by GT&T organising Committee Chairman, Mr. Carmachand Rambarran who echoed the views of his CEO Mr. Yog Mahadeo that assured the teams that should there be an increase in team participation next year then the telephone company will double the money for the winners. Mr. Rambarran further gave an update on the expectations of his organization for next year’s tournament and those of the two other stakeholders, GSL and Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports while announcing the introduction of a Female category which will see the winner carting off big money.
The recent tournament was deemed the biggest and most successful sporting event staged locally to date and the organisers have promised the introduction of other features for the next edition of the tournament.
The Chairman further challenged the Lindeners to come up with at least 100 teams for next year’s competition. Spectators were also entertained by GT&T models as well as crowd favorites Bluie Max and the local look-alike Harbhajan Singh.
Three exhibition matches also added to the excitement; the first with the ever improving South Star XI, which is regarded as the current top team in Linden, defeating Classic XI by a nail biting 3 run margin. South Star XI won the toss and batted, scoring 130-5 in their 10 overs with Krishen Basdeo (54) and Jason Allicock (28) leading them to their eventual score. Anthony Bell captured 5-23 from 2 overs for Classic XI who replied with 127–9 in their allotted overs. Sylvan Hinds top scored with 44 while Krishen Basdeo returned with the ball to capture 4-11 from 2 overs.
In the second match between the top female teams, Ituni Warriors defeated Great Falls Female team by 9 wickets. Great Falls Females scored 53-3 in their allotted 8 overs with Nikeshia Wilson anchoring the innings with an unbeaten 18. Ituni Warriors raced to 54-1 in 5.3 overs with Felicia Fraser clobbering 29 not out.
In the feature match of the day GT&T Blue XI took on The Bad Boyz XI of Linden and the former team made light work of the latter after GT&T XI batted first and rattled up a challenging 124-5 in their 10 overs.
Dhanpaul Ram clobbering 48 off 30 balls (5×6, 2×4) to take the honours for his team. The Bad Boyz failed to respond in kind with Eon Rodrigues being their best bowler with 2-30 from 2 overs for GT&T.
Bad Boys started their reply disastrously and never recovered from the fall of several early wickets. They eventually folded for 82 in 9.3 overs with Wayne Williams (11) being the only batsman to reach double figures. Bowling for GT&T Nar Jaipaul finished with 3-17, Carmachand Rambarran 2- 11 and Talesh Ramotar 2-15.
The awareness campaign continues with matches at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground Essequibo, tomorrow 28.
Essequibians are expected to turn out in their numbers to partake in all of GT&T’s special offers and witness the top Male and Female teams battle each other in several exciting matches. There will also be promotions and giveaways and deals as the entertaining Bluie Max and company thrill the crowd.
