Leacock almost pulls off upset; Miller advances to face Squires in Men’s Finals
When play in the Pegasus Open continued on Friday last Don Singh emerged as the top 35 & Over Men’s Single player when he defeated Gilbert Barckoy in straight sets to claim the title.
Singh used his first serve as a weapon and sent down several aces as he raced away to a 5-2 lead.
Barckoy a veteran player then used his experience to claw back to 5-4 before Singh put away the set with a big service game.
The second set was a battle of slices and lobs as Singh changed tactics and tried to let Barckoy make the errors. He eventually took the set 6-3.
There was an epic battle between Leyland Leacock and Jeremy Miller in the Men’s Singles semi-finals. Leacock battled hard despite being unwell and nearly pulled off the upset against the number two seed Miller.
Both players started off steadily before Leacock broke serve and went ahead 4-2. Despite being down 2-5 Miller fought back and was on serve at 4-5 before he faltered and had his serve broken again to lose the set 6-4.
The second set was extremely close despite the players trading breaks, the set went to 6-6 before Miller raised his game a notch to pull out the tiebreak 7-4 and even the match.
Miller continued with some dominant play early in the third set, racing off to a 3-0 lead before Leacock who plays a steady game and is known for battling hard came back to even it up at 3 all.
He saved several break points throughout the match before he eventually went down as his serve was again broken and lost the set 6-4. Miller will now face top seed Phillip Squires in the finals.
Scheduled matches on the weekend; Junior player Krystal Sukra was down to take on veteran Carol Humphrey in the Ladies singles finals while Harry Panday was up to match serves against Steve David Longe in the Men’s 45 singles.
