Starr Computers, a Georgetown-based technology provider, on Tuesday, launched its latest innovation in computer engineering: the Star X-finity GPC 525.
The appeal of the Star X-finity is that it performs all the functions of any other computer on a meager 28 watts.
At a demonstration on Tuesday at Starr’s 59 Brickdam office, it was illustrated with wattage technology that while a Dell computer utilizes 114 watts of power, the Starr X-finity’s 28 watts would constitute a substantial saving in electricity cost.
Michael Mohan, President of Starr Computer who conducted Tuesday’s demonstration, explained that the Starr X-finity is actually a prototype and that Starr plans to commence manufacturing these computers locally in January. The local price attached to this product would be approximately $79,000.
The innovation of the Starr X-finity would be in consonance with a low carbon economy. Further, it was explained that energy efficient products would be a focus of the Starr brand.
Mohan explained that Starr’s assembly plant would be capable of manufacturing 100 such computers per day and that since the local market may not be able to absorb this quantity, Starr would be seriously exploring the export market.
He posited that a key target market for such a product would be hinterland communities as this computer can function using rechargeable battery technology.
The chairman explained that a key supplement provided by Starr for the usage of such computers is the Starr X-finity solar station. Such technology would be ideal for communities with no access to GPL service.
Mohan explained that one innovation that would soon be offered by Starr is the Starr X-finity multiplier which would allow for a series of computers to be connected to the CPU of the X-finity.
He said that such technology would be a great fillip to learning in schools and homes. Moreover, such technology would make it much easier for entrepreneurs to invest in interest chafes and computer centres.
He posited that since computers are the nucleus of economic development, the Government needs to be more innovate and strategic in its technology policy in order to make computers more readily available in Guyanese homes.
Mohan reasoned that the government should utilize and thereby empower the local computer providers in its computer outreach programme as this will further stimulate the industry.
The employment that would be created, it was posited, would translate to tangible growth.
Mohan disclosed that Starr Computer has been in operation for over 20 years and it is the mission of Starr to offer innovation in technology products and service.
