Berbician Dhieranidranauth Somwaru was elected president of the Guyana Cricket Umpires Council when the body held its Bi-annual general meeting recently at the Georgetown Cricket Club pavilion.
Somwaru gained 28 votes ahead of Grantley Culbard who got 21.
Ernest Hinds is the Vice President, while Nigel Duguid was elected Secretary. The Treasurer is Eddie Nichols and the Assistant Secretary Treasurer is Zabeer Zakier. Matthew Kissoon was elected Public Relations Officer and the Committee Members are Clement Brusche, Rafeek Latiff, Joseph Jeffery and Nandkumar Shivsankar.
Speaking after the elections, Somwaru thanked the members for electing him, while Guyana Cricket Board Secretary Anand Sanasie, urged them to encourage the young umpires.
International umpire Clyde Duncan also congratulated the members elected to serve and the umpires who were recently successful at West Indies Cricket Umpires Association final written exams.
He also noted a few changes in the laws of the game. Outgoing president Colin Alfred thanked Sanasie. Members from the Berbice, Demerara and Essequibo umpires Associations attended the meeting.
