The Pepsi ‘Refresh Your World’ basketball challenge opens today when the junior players take the National Gymnasium Basketball Court for the 2010 tournament to start what is expected to be a packed day of basketball action at the facility.
Teams from as far as Kwakwani will be engaged in the two-day contest that the President of the Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club, Merle Jordon said will definitely be interesting since all the teams are unusual compositions for the first time at the Gymnasium
The competition will begin at 10am each day and includes Pepsi Sonics, Guyana Defence Force, Qualfon, Giftland OfficeMax, Banks DIH among others. None of the seasoned basketball teams will take part in this year’s competition for a deliberate reason.
Jordon said that the tournament aims to expose teams that usually don’t get an opportunity to be part of a major fixture before prime time basketball enthusiasts. In an update yesterday, she told Kaieteur Sport that all systems are in place to host the event.
“Everything has gone well so far with our planning for the tournament. We will start off things on a positive note tomorrow morning (this morning),” Jordon indicated while adding that she is anticipating a smooth flow of the games carded for the day.
After the junior and girls’ games, Pepsi Sonics and Qualfon will play in one of the many grudge matches expected today. Following their contest, Kaieteur Sport understands that Giftland OfficeMax will play Banks DIH in another big game.
Ansa McAl, Interstate Batteries, DDL under its Pepsi brand and Humphrey’s Bakery are among the major sponsors of the 2010 competition. Other sponsors include 2Js General Store, HJTV, Automotive Essentials, Laparkan, Bakewell and the National Sports Commission. Jump Ball time is 10:00hrs.
