Kenrick Shepherd will have to spend the next four years in jail. Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, imposed the sentence on him yesterday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
On October 13, 2008, Shepherd was charged with three counts of inflicting grievous bodily harm, which occurred on August, 29, 2008, on Karen Anthony, Trevor Griffith and Ray Sampson.
Shepherd, who pleaded not guilty to the charges at that time, was found guilty under the Administration Justice Act (AJA). He was sentenced to four years on each of the three counts.
The sentences will run concurrently.
Also appearing before Magistrate Priya Beharry was Dawn Roberts of North Ruimveldt, Georgetown.
Roberts, who was unrepresented by a defence attorney, pleaded guilty to the charge of unlawful wounding, as it was read to her, while she stood in the prisoner’s dock.
It is alleged that on November 23, last, the accused unlawfully and maliciously wounded Dion Norton, with the intention to inflict severe bodily harm.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the accused and the virtual complainant are workmates at the Georgetown public hospital (GPHC) as cleaners. He said the two were not on speaking terms, thus an argument ensued.
Telford said that as a result of the argument, the accused held Norton on the ground and dealt her several cuts to the face, using a sharp object. He said that after the incident occurred, the defendant made good her escape by foot.
Telford added that Norton sought medical attention at the GPHC. Subsequently, the defendant was arrested and charged.
The defendant told the court that Norton attacked her first, and a scuffle ensued. She said that Norton held onto her hair and threw her down on the ground, where she struck a garbage bin.
Roberts said that it was while she was on the ground that she saw a “rusty” razor blade and dealt the woman several cuts to her face in her defence.
The Magistrate entered a not guilty plead for the defendant and ordered her to make another court appearance on December 6.
