Lending total support to address proposals and offer advice in the eradication of violence against women, the Diocese of Guyana Mother’s Union, hosted an educational symposium on the Essequibo Coast.
The discussion attracted panelists from both Governmental and non-Governmental organizations. Presenters confronted social topical issues that contribute to domestic violence.
Among the panelists were Mother’s Union Diocesan President, Sheran Harper, Public Education officer\Counselor, attached at Help and Shelter; Ms. Karen Gomes, Senior Officer of the Child Care and Protection Agency\Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security; Parish Priest, Anna Regina, Reverend Rupert Osborne’ Attorney –at-Law, Gem Sanford-Johnson, Mother’s Union regional officer, Corleen Steaman, and AFC, Counselor, Francis Darchiville.
Ms. Harper, said that the elimination of all forms of violence was paramount in addressing, not only violence meted to women, but to children too.
“I believe that it is no coincidence that today’s event occurs when horrendous forms of trauma and extraordinary behaviour continue to take place in our society, even in our own backyards.
“Still fresh in our minds is the sad story of 16-year-old, Neesa Gopaul. Violence is an injustice. We must condemn it, and remove it from both our homes and communities,” Harper stressed.
She added that throughout the country, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, NGO’s, including Faith-based and other organizations, must continue to work alongside each other to condemn and remove all forms of violence from homes and communities.
Harper further urged the men who were present to be involved in the fight to curb violence against women. She noted that men play an integral part of the equation, in creating positive change to end violence and destruction.
Harper noted that since 1991, approximately 1700 organizations in 130 countries.
The other panelist shared on the topics of Substance abuse and violence, violence and the Child, Violence- A biblical perspective and violence and the Law.
Attorney at law Sandford-Johnson, who briefly dealt with the topics of violence and the
Law, told the audience that the convention on the rights of the child is a treaty adopted by the United Nations in 1989 and ratified by the Government of Guyana in 1991.
The symposium concluded with the tying of ribbons and the lighting of candles by each attendee at the Anna Regina Town Hall.
