Digicel's Public Relations and Events Manager Shonette Moore presents the sponsorship cheque to GVF President Lenox Shuffler in the presence of visiting members of the Lyzecks Club yesterday.
– on board for today’s tournament
Digicel, one of the leading business entities in the support for sport made its initial engagement with the Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) and will partner with them to host the International Goodwill Series that features Suriname’s leading club Lyzecks against top local clubs.
During a simple ceremony that was conducted in the Company’s Boardroom yesterday, Public Relations and Events Manager Shonette Moore presented a cheque for $170,000 to GVF President Lenox Shuffler in the presence of members of the visiting club and the media.
The tournament which serves off today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will see top local clubs Young Achievers that was instrumental in organising the visit, Castrol Strikers and GuySuCo Training Centre of Port Mourant engage Suriname’s most dominant club Lyzecks in a round-robin competition to determine which team is the best among the four clubs.
According to Shuffler the purpose of the visit is to strengthen ties with member clubs within the Bloc Development Strategy and to assess the standard of the game here.
“Apart from us trying to maintain the momentum of the sport here, we are also seeking to strengthen ties with our neighbours in Suriname, Brazil and French Guiana as well as get an accurate assessment of the level of the standard locally,” Shuffler said.
He added that while the club is here they will take the opportunity to discuss the future in terms of sustaining the friendship and to organise more interaction among the countries.
Moore in her remarks said that her entity was happy to be on board, pointing out that it was their first contact with the Body and were excited about the games today.
She added that Digicel will continue to assist in the development of sports across the country.
Captain of Lyzecks Giovanni Lin-Tsung in response said that they are happy to be visiting Guyana to participate in the Series and is something that they’ve always wanted to do.
“We’ve played Guyana in Suriname before and it’s an honour to be in Guyana playing against the best clubs. I want to thank Digicel for presenting us with the opportunity and may the best team win,” Lin-Tsung.
Coach Gary Ling said that if the tour serves as an opportunity to lift the standard of the sport here then they will be very happy.
“We have a new team and it is a chance for me to see where we are in terms of our standard of play and I hope that we could do this tournament more often,” Ling told the gathering.
He spoke of it being an exchange visit where one team host a year and the other do likewise the next.
Lyzecks is the current national champions and have won the title 15 times in the last 16 years.
They recently hosted the Caribbean championship where they ended runner-up.
Serve off time is 16:00 hrs. (Rawle Welch)
