… seeks public assistance
Yesterday marked one month since the “Charlestown chopping spree” occurred, claiming the lives of 38-year-old Ann Cham-a-Koon of Russell Street, and 75-year-old Cedric Blackman, of 57 Russell and Howes Streets, with two others sustaining injuries during the savage attack.
The two injured persons, 41-year-old Radesh Persaud, of 66 Russell Street and 41-year-old Sean De Souza of 58 Howes Street, received medical treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) and were discharged.
Persaud sustained a chop to the head while De Souza was chopped to the shoulder and neck.
Yesterday morning, De Souza explained that he wanted to express his heartfelt gratitude to the members of the public who assisted him on the day of the attack and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) for their prompt and quick response.
De Souza said that he was grateful to the police who arrived at the scene in a very short time and hurriedly took him to the GPHC for medical treatment. “If it wasn’t for their rapid response, I may not have been alive today, and I will always remember those who were there for me.”
He also wished to thank the entire staff of the GPHC especially Doctor Mahadeo, who, according to De Souza, “put him back together”. From the moment he was admitted at the GPHC, Doctor Mahadeo, was “at the forefront”, he added.
De Souza told this newspaper that he was unable to work for the past month due to the injuries he received at his shoulder and neck, and being a mechanic, lifting heavy objects would have caused a strain to his body and complicated his “healing process”.
According to the mechanic, the nerves near to his neck, at the back of his head, where he was chopped were cut. He said that he has “no feelings” at this particular part of his head but was reassured by Doctor Mahadeo that it would take a while to “heal and repair by itself”.
De Souza stated that he was told that this process would take between six months and one year, and therefore, he is kindly asking members of the public to assist him during this period since he will be unable to work.
He even welcomes those who wish to share their compassion with him.
De Souza is the father of a seven-year-old son who is currently attending school.
On October 26, 2010, the events at Charlestown that left two persons dead and two others injured also left a majority of residents at a loss for words. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old William Lyte (Brother Lyte), of Stevedore Squatting Area, Georgetown, has been remanded to prison having been charged with the murders of Ann Cham-a-Koon and Cedric Blackman.
