Marlon Letlow, Linden Scotland and Kim Bumbury, who were all charged with the double murders in Bartica, which occurred September, last, made another court appearance before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, on Monday last, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Letlow and Scotland were charged with relieving, receiving and maintaining Rawle Newton, knowing that he had murdered Jainarine Raghubar and Ramdeo Deonarine. Bumbury was charged with aiding and abetting Rawle Newton, her reputed husband.
The three were told to return to court on February 2, 2011 since Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford was not in possession of their case files. Telford respectfully made an application for adjournment.
Kaieteur News understands that Letlow, Scotland and Bumbury were granted bail at the High Court last week.
The mutilated and bound bodies of Deonarine and Raghubar were found in a house at Second Avenue, Bartica.
The discovery was made by a female associate of Deonarine who claimed that she was invited by him to spend the day in Bartica.
Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, had stated that some of the injuries Deonarine sustained suggested that he was tortured before having his throat slit.
The owner of the building, Ricky Ramnarine, told detectives that his office, which is located in the bottom flat of the building, was broken into.
According to police, Ramnarine stated that $1.3M, two laptop computers, 100 ounces of raw gold, a .32 Taurus pistol with six rounds and a Rolex wristwatch were stolen.
The police said that the perpetrators had broken into the premises and had also forced their way into the upper part of the building where the two men were sleeping.
Commissioner Greene had stated that the perpetrators took their victims to the lower portion of the building where they beat them, apparently to force them to disclose the location of even more money.
Greene also said that there was a ‘back to school party’ next door, with loud music. This would have masked any sounds coming from the victims during the attack.
Also appearing before Magistrate Beharry, on Monday, last, was Leon Bernard of 49 Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, who was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, being unlicensed driver and for breach of insurance.
It is alleged that on November 11, last, the defendant drove a motor vehicle, which collided with Petal Lewis, who died subsequently at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC) while receiving medical attention.
It is also alleged that on November 11, last, the defendant was the unlicensed driver of motor lorry GKK 379 and was in possession of an expired insurance coverage.
Bernard, who was represented by attorney at law Euclin Gomes, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The lawyer, by way of a bail application, told the court that he has evidence to show that at the point of impact, there is no pedestrian crossing, as the prosecutor indicated.
According to Gomes, his client’s employer has promised to compensate the family of the deceased.
He said that it is the responsibility of the employer to update the insurance of the vehicle, since the vehicle does not belong to his client.
He added that his client has an unblemished record, thus the Magistrate should grant bail with leniency.
However, Prosecutor Telford objected to bail on the grounds of the evidence against the defendant.
He told the court that the defendant was preceding north along the western side of Camp Street, at a fast rate of speed.
Telford said that the deceased was crossing the pedestrian’s crossing located on Camp Street, when the defendant collided with her. He indicated that the woman died on November 16, as a result of the injuries she
sustained. Telford stated that the matter was reported to the police, when the incident occurred. He said that an investigation was conducted, and it was highlighted that the accused was not in possession of a driver’s license and a valid insurance coverage.
Telford added that he was objecting to bail, because he is contenting that the court takes a serious view of the increase of these incidents.
He said that drivers should be careful, cautious and considerate when using the roads.
However the Magistrate granted bail to the tune of $250,000 for the charge of causing death by dangerous driving and $25,000 each for the other charges.
The defendant is to make his next court appearance on December 01.
