-‘Refresh Your World’ is 2010 theme
The Pepsi Sonic Basketball Club’s annual competition is set for this weekend under the theme ‘Refresh Your World’ at the refurbished National Gymnasium Basketball Court and will include teams from as far as Kwakwani for the two-day contest.
The competition will begin at 10:00hrs each day and includes Pepsi Sonics, Guyana Defence Force, Qualfon, Giftland Office Max and Banks DIH among others. Kaieteur Sports understand that the U-19 junior national teams will also play during the event. President of the Pepsi Sonics Basketball Club, Merle Jordon said that the event is usually held under different themes each year, and this year the competition has a different purpose in that it is being used as a fund raiser to build a facility for the club.
“We are trying to bring out some talent and expose some people in this competition, that is why we have these teams,” Jordan said when asked why some teams such as Courts Pacesetters and Ravens were not invited to compete in the activity.
She said that those teams are seasoned teams and while their support is necessary for the success of the event, the level of competition does not suit those clubs. Jordan said that she anticipates a good turnout and usual support from the basketball community.
Ansa McAl, Interstate Batteries, DDL under its Pepsi brand and Humphrey’s Bakery are among the major sponsors of the 2010 competition. Jordon indicated that an activity will also be held for their junior teams since the club missed the vocational activity this year.
