Nineteen year-old Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club (RHTY&SC) female cricketer Nermala Sewdat was honoured on Saturday last by her clubmates for her achievement of winning two gold and a bronze medal at the recently concluded Ministry of Education/Guyana Teachers Union National School Athletics Championships.
Sewdat was duly recognised by members of the Rose Hall Town Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Bakewell Under-17, Pepsi Under-19, Metro Female and Gizmos & Gadgets Under-23 teams during a specially arranged ceremony at the Club’s Area ‘H’ office.
Secretary/CEO of the Club Hilbert Foster said that Sewdat was the first member in the Club’s 20 year history to have won a gold medal at the athletic event; winning gold in the Under-21 teacher’s race in the 800m and 1500m. Sewdat also won bronze in the 400m.
Foster hailed Sewdat as a true sporting ambassador of Guyana’s leading youth & sports organisation while praising her for upholding the high standards that the club has set over the years.
Foster disclosed that two members had taken part in the nationals and the club had pledged that if any one of them won a gold medal they would be rewarded with a cash prize.
He challenged the other members of the club to follow Sewdat’s example of working hard to achieve goals she had set for herself, noting that in 2010 alone she was named the most Discipline Female Member of the Club, Teacher of the Year by the Port Mourant Secondary School and now a national champion.
Sewdat was urged by Foster to use her latest achievements to achieve even more and to be a positive role model to every youth in Berbice.
Sewdat’s teaching colleague and Senior Master of the Port Mourant Secondary School, Mr. Rohan Etwaru in delivering the feature address praised her for believing in her own ability despite the great odds she faced.
Speaking on the topic “Believe in yourself”, Etwaru urged club members to make sure that they fulfill all their potential, always aiming for the sky.
Sewdat in brief remarks expressed gratitude to the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and her club mates for honoring her, stated that it was a special privilege to be a part of Guyana’s most dynamic sports organisation. She pledged to defend her gold medals next year as she was inspired by the actions of her peers at the club.
Sewdat received $40,000 cash along with $10,000 worth of prizes from her club mates and a trophy.
In an effort to lift its standard even higher, Foster announced that from next year all gold medalists at the nationals will receive $25,000 or a trip to Kaieteur Falls; silver medalists will collect $15,000 while a bronze medal will attract $10,000. At the junior cricketing level from Under-15 to 23 batsmen and bowlers would also receive financial rewards for scoring centuries and taking five wicket hauls.
The RHTY&SC is expressing gratitude to Fizal Ally of A. Ally & Sons, Peter Lewis, Anil Beharry, Bobby’s Boutique, Imran Hamid and Poonai Bhirooj for their assistance in making the programme a success.
