– assault rifle, 500 rounds of ammo, eight magazines recovered
Heavily-armed police were up to last night hunting for a gunman who threw a grenade at a police corporal and shot at other ranks shortly after an assault rifle, several magazines and ammunition was found in a bushy area aback of Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
Commander of ‘E’ and ‘F’ Division, Assistant Commissioner David Ramnarine confirmed the discovery of the arms cache, and said that other “military paraphernalia” were also found. He declined to identify the type of rifle that was recovered.
However, sources said that the weapon is an AK-47 assault rifle.
Kaieteur News was told that about 500 rounds of ammunition, eight magazines—duct-taped together two each—four handcuffs and three camouflage vests were also found.
The area where the cache was found has a large farming community.
According to a resident, a boy made the discovery while visiting his father’s farm. He immediately told his father who contacted the police.
Residents said that as police were heading for the area, they spotted a man walking up a hill. They immediately challenged the man, who threw a grenade at them before fleeing into the bushes.
Commander Ramnarine said that the discovery was made at around 14:00 hrs and that ranks from Georgetown had joined their colleagues in the hunt for the gunman.
He said that shortly after the weapons were found, police received reports that a man, who was armed with a grenade, was walking on the Amelia’s Ward public road.
Police responded promptly and the man threw a grenade at a police corporal from the Anti-Crime Unit. Fortunately, the grenade failed to explode.
The man reportedly also shot at the ranks before taking refuge in a bushy area nearby. He was still at large at press time.
Ramnarine said that police ranks from Georgetown were dispatched to the area to assist in the hunt.
“We will continue our operation tonight (last night) and into tomorrow (today),” the Commander said.
He stated that the identity of the fugitive is unknown and it is unclear whether he was wounded in the shootout.
But he said that the discovery of the cache suggests that the police are dealing with a dangerous individual.
