Shawn DeSouza, the attacking GNIC batsman who had a wonderful season for the Sweet Revenge Club in Trinidad this year is the only new comer selected in a depleted Demerara team for the Guyana Cricket Board’s Carib/Pepsi four-team T20 cricket tournament which starts next Friday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
The tournament, which involves defending champions Berbice, Demerara, Essequibo and a Rest team, will be played on a round/robin format with two matches on Friday December 3, 4 & 5. The third place match and the final are scheduled for Providence on December 10.
Already with Shivnarine Chanderpaul unavailable due to his West Indies commitments in Sri Lanka, Demerara are also without National T20 Skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan and specialist Lennox Cush due to commitments in the USA.
Narsingh Deonarine, who is also expected to play in the annual US Open T20 tournament in Florida, could also miss the GCB tournament which has been set on the exact dates of the USA competition which has a first prize of US$25,000.
Chairman of the GCB Competitions Committee Carl Moore confirmed yesterday that the GCB competition, which will be used to select the Guyana team for January’s Caribbean T20 tournament will have a day and a night match on each of the four days of action with each team playing each other once before the final day.
The players involved in the US Open had given the clubs in North America their commitments to that tournament before the dates for the Guyana competition were finalised and it will be interesting to see if Sarwan and company will be considered for national selection if they miss the GCB competition.
Chairman of the Demerara selectors Robert ‘Pacer’ Adonis said that both Sarwan and Cush, who are expected to return to Guyana on December 6, will be available for Demerara once they qualify for the third place match or the final on January 10.
“I know Sarwan will miss the first three matches and I believe Cush also since they should be playing in the USA during that time and that’s why we have picked a 15-man squad instead of a13-man squad. Although I am hearing that Johnson could be involved in the USA also, I have had no word from the player or anyone saying he was unavailable and he has been picked in the squad to play at the Stadium from next Friday,” Adonis informed yesterday.
Adonis also informed that Demerara has put forward 9 other Demerara players to the National selectors who will select the Rest team for the competition.
Guyana are the defending West Indies T20 champions and the highest placed regional team in the Caribbean T20 tournament which also includes Somerset, Hampshire and Canada. The winner will qualify for next year’s Champions League.
The Demerara squad: Travis Dowlin, Chris Barnwell, Steven Jacobs, Wasim Haslim, Derwin Christian, Andre Stoll, Trevon Garraway, Zaheer Mohamed, Totaram Bishun, Shawn De Souza, Jamal Hinckson, Amir Khan, Lennox Cush, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Leon Johnson.
