French Guiana authorities have captured a Guyanese man who is wanted here for allegedly murdering his reputed wife, Okemo Todd, almost nine months ago.
Police officials confirmed yesterday that the suspect, 24-year-old Charles Rawlins, was arrested in the French territory and has since been deported.
No wanted bulletin was ever issued here for Rawlins, but Kaieteur News understands that his arrest may have stemmed from information that the Guyana Police Force provided to the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol).
The victim, 21-year-old Okemo Todd, of Ketley Street, Charlestown, was allegedly stabbed to death by Rawlins, the father of her two children, on February 28, last.
On that day, residents of Ketley Street, Charlestown, were reportedly awakened by loud screams of “Help!” and “Murder!” coming from the small house in which Todd and her children resided. Todd, who was bleeding profusely, then plunged through one of the windows.
Reportedly pursued by the suspect, the severely injured woman then scaled the high galvanized fence in front of her home. She reportedly then clambered over the gate of the Ketley Primary School and held onto a security guard. Her alleged attacker also entered the school compound but fled after seeing the guard.
Todd collapsed in the schoolyard and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. A knife was recovered at the crime scene.
The suspect went into hiding after allegedly sending death threats to the slain woman’s relatives. The man’s relatives had also expressed their fear of him. They were later informed that he had fled to Cayenne.
Todd’s relatives reported that she had suffered years of abuse at his hands and would often move out of the couple’s Ketley Street home, only to return.
