Appearing before acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, yesterday, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, was Alvin Jaunga aka “Captain,” who was charged with murder.
It is alleged that on May 14, 2005, the accused murdered Desmond Henry in the Five Star backdam, North West District.
Jaunga, who was unrepresented by a defence attorney, was not required to plead to the indictable offence of murder, when the charge was read to him.
On the day in question, the deceased and the accused had a misunderstanding, when the defendant reportedly blamed the deceased for stealing a “kiddy,” which is a container used to store gold.
During the argument, the defendant reportedly threatened the deceased that he would kill him if he did not return the “kiddy.”
The defendant, according to the police, later armed himself with a bow and arrow and shot the deceased in the region of his heart. Henry was taken to the hospital, where he died subsequently as a result of the injury he sustained.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that the accused was never arrested for the offence, but that an arrest warrant was issued for him.
According to Telford, the matter was thrown out by the presiding Magistrate at that time because the police could not produce the accused. He said that on November 17, last, the defendant was seen at Matthew’s Ridge, North.West District, where he was arrested and told of the allegations against him.
Telford added that the defendant gave the police a caution statement with his signature attached; hence he was recharged for the same offence.
The defendant is to make his next court appearance on February 01, 2011 at the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrates’ Court.
And on Monday, 31-year-old Joseph Kaladin, of Enmore North was remanded to prison after he appeared in court charged with the murder of his brother.
Kaladin made his appearance at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Sherdell Isaacs.
It is alleged that on November 19, last, at Enmore North, Kaladin called ‘Joey’ stabbed his brother Ganesh Nabi. Nabi was pronounced dead some time later while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
On the day in question the two brothers were seen consuming alcohol before they became involved in a fight during which the elder brother was killed.
That matter will be called again on December 10.
