The passing of a political icon

Dear Editor,
Over the last 11 days Guyanese, and more particularly, the members and supporters of the Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) have been hoping and praying for a total reverse in the Mr. Murray’s medical situation. Today, however, we are confronted with the painful fact that the Almighty needed him more, it appears that God, Almighty has decided that Comrade’s Murray’s oratorical skills, coupled with his unquestionable wittiness and rare qualities are needed on “the other side”.
I have come to know Mr. Murray through my involvement in politics; first at the level of the PNCR and then nationally. As a young person, my first impression of him was that; “this is a man of great substance”. The first time he greeted me by my first name I was shocked, since at the time, we had hardly known each other. So I was amazed that he actually knew my name.
From then on I developed a kind of ‘rare admiration’ and unquestionable respect for him. I believe it was this first impression that was responsible for the mutual respect we had for each other. During my tenure as Chairperson, and even while serving as its National Secretary, of the Guyana Youth and Students Movement (GYSM), Mr. Murray was continuously supportive of the work of the organisation, and would, on many occasions find the time to ask; “Lurlene, but how things with the GYSM girl”. Of course, his intention was a genuine effort to ascertain what was happening with the party’s youths.
In a letter in the SN dated, Monday January 19, 2009 I had this to say of Mr. Murray, when he resigned as chairman of the PNCR;
“Dear Editor,
I wish to publicly congratulate Mr. Winston Murray, MP for his demonstration of strong leadership, character, strength and wisdom while he served in the capacity of Chairman of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR). Undoubtedly, the invaluable contribution he brought to the office of Party Chairman will continue to stand out in the minds of members and supporters alike. His continued support for the success and development of the PNCR is unquestionable; his skills in dealing with matters both internal and external to the party are indicative of his tremendous reservoir of talent.
Mr. Murray was not only a Chairman of the PNCR but has continued to be a national leader, political icon, and a positive role model for our young people.
I wish Mr. Winston Murray every continued success, and look forward to benefiting from his usual impressive work in Parliament and in the party.”
Today, I would only wish to add that I want to thank Mr. Murray for his service to country, his 30 plus years in public service cannot be forgotten. The passing of Comrade Winston Murray has undoubtedly plugged a gaping hole in the blanket of politics in Guyana. The parliament will be void of one of the most prolific, and rigorous debaters. The Peoples National Congress Reform family has lost a true stalwart, and comrade. The nation has lost a true patriot; his work here on earth was well done.
My sincere condolences to his wife, and family. As you mourn these passing days be reminded that God is our greatest comforter.
