Investigators have almost ruled out foul play in the death of popular gold and diamond dealer, 70-year-old Joseph Hillaire, called ‘Uncle Joe’, who was found dead in his Lot 22 Chalmers Place, Brickdam, home.
Police confirmed that Hillaire’s lifeless body was discovered by his wife in his bathroom around 22:00 hours on Tuesday night, with a single gunshot wound to his head.
His licenced Taurus revolver with five live rounds and one spent shell was found next to his body.
While the businessman’s family remained tightlipped, a police source told this newspaper that Hillaire’s wife who was watching television decided to check on him after he did not emerge from his bathroom after several minutes had elapsed.
She got the shock of her life when she saw his lifeless body lying in a pool of blood.
The woman raised an alarm and Hillaire’s body was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
This newspaper understands that Hillaire was suffering from cancer at the time of his death.
A post mortem examination will be performed on the body tomorrow (Friday).
