Boxing buffs anxiously awaiting the announcement of the new date for the 10th edition of the ProAm boxing card can now rest easy following recent confirmation by the organizers. Boxers will now show off their skills on Friday December 3, one week after the initial date.
Former Secretary of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Trevor Arno made this disclosure yesterday afternoon, a few hours after the committee tasked with the responsibility of rescheduling the card, arrived at a decision.
Mr. Arno also confirmed that negotiations are ongoing pertaining to the inclusion of a bout between Barbadian based Guyanese heavyweight pugilist, Shawn Cox, scheduled to match gloves with a Venezuelan in defence of the former fighter’s Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) heavyweight title. Mr. Arno said that the officials of the GBBC would be in a position to affirmatively speak on this issue within a few days.
The card was initially set for tomorrow night but the organizers were forced to push back the date to facilitate the Summit of the Union of South American Nations which got underway Tuesday and culminates Saturday. Mr. Arno explained that the National Television Network (NCN), which usually carries a live broadcast of the fights, would be unavailable to do so as the summit would be a priority.
Meanwhile, the boxers that comprise the card have already readjusted their minds and training programmes to facilitate the postponement. Troy Lewis, who had once held the record for the fastest knockout after he blew away Rudolph Fraser in just over 2 minutes in an earlier edition of the programme has had to swallow a bitter pill after Simeon Hardy faced Patrick Boston and disposed of him in just twenty electrifying seconds.
Naturally, Lewis became upset that his record no longer exists and has issued a call for the man that had dared to wipe off his achievement from the record books. The executive of the GBBC has decided to call Lewis’ bluff and matched the two pugilists in a junior middleweight bout that will headline this month’s edition of the card. The two fighters are spewing vitriol at each other and fans can expect an action packed, no holds barred affair.
The other boxers expected to add to the excitement are Joel McRae, just off a drawn decision against James Walcott in the last Caribbean Fury Boxing card. He will oppose Lindener, Edmond DeClou in a super middleweight contest while Pauline London will fight Kwinda Rogers in a catchweight encounter.
The card takes on an international flavour when Eversley Brown tackles Trinidadian Kurt Sinnette in a super/middleweight duel, while Kurt Bess, still riding high after scoring an upset victory over local heavyweight champion Mitchell Rogers, will attempt to overcome Anthony Augustin in a heavyweight showdown. Should the Cox encounter materialize then fans can settle down for a good treat.
Meanwhile, the executive of the GABA has also released the list of boxers that will comprise the amateur segment of the card. Michael April will oppose Dewani Lampkin in the 80-84lbs category while Romano Clarke and David Thomas battle in the junior/welterweight division. Junior/flyweights Moolchand Sankar and Kevin Allicock will clash in a bout that is expected to produce some fireworks while Ron Smith and Kelsie George square off in the middleweight division.
The card is organized by the GBBC, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport (MCYS), the National Communication Network (NCN) and the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA
NCN Television would be carrying a live broadcast of the action while those attending the venue will be required to pay a small entrance fee of $1,000. Bell time is 20:00hrs
